MLA Format

(based on the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers)

Background of the Handbook

The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers was first published in 1977 by the Modern Language Association of America. The MLA is an organization of teachers and scholars founded in 1883. The beginnings of the Handbook go back to 1951 when it first appeared as a style sheet developed by the executive director of the MLA to assist in the preparation of manuscripts for publication.

After several interim editions, the most recent (6th edition - 2003) includes guidelines for:

  • evaluating sources (including Internet sources)(Section 1.6)
  • citing internet (and other electronic ) resources in MLA format (Section 5.9).
